Today, I received my new Powerline kit from Amazon. We have wifi in the house, and for the most part, the speed is acceptable. However, all the large media files, such as pictures and movies, along with VMs and ISOs really tax the speed. So I started looking for ways to essentially add a "wire"-like speed connection between upstairs and downstairs as my main office is upstairs these days. The downstairs office is taken over by my father-in-law :) So I got the Netgear Powerline AV 500 Adapter Kit to experiment and I have to say that I'm impressed with it so far. Set up was as simple as plug and play!
I have a server downstairs with lots of files that I routinely need access. Going over wireless just wasn't fast enough for me. There's too much interference with various devices. This is giving me speeds around 80Mbps, which isn't bad. I'll keep playing with it to see if I can boost the speed even further. I guess when we buy a place in the future, I'm going to put gigabit network drops everywhere.
